I write from a small cottage tucked in the hills of northern England, where the seasons still have the power to stop you mid-sentence. It’s here that most of my ideas — philosophical, poetic, and fictional — seem to find their way into being.

My first book, In the Becoming: Finding Meaning in an Unfinished World, grew from years of notes, long walks, and quiet reflection. It’s not a theology or a philosophy textbook but a way of seeing: that life is not finished, that creation itself is still unfolding, and that we are part of that movement. The book invites the reader to pause — to rediscover meaning not as a final answer but as a living presence that keeps growing and changing with us.

Where In the Becoming offers the ideas, The Nitty-Gritty God: Poetry of Becoming gives them breath. It’s a collection of poems written over many years — poems that dig their hands into the soil of life, love, loss, and faith. They celebrate the holiness of the ordinary, the sacred that hides in everyday mess and tenderness. I’ve always believed that God is found as much in laughter, skin, and wild garlic as in stained glass and ceremony — and the poems follow that instinct, looking for light in the nitty-gritty of being alive.

Together, these two books form the foundations of my work — the philosophy and the poetry of becoming. But the journey doesn’t stop there. Through my Cottage Diary website, I’m now beginning to explore these same ideas through fiction — short stories, serialized novels, and small imaginative worlds that carry the same questions into new forms.

Each story — whether it’s a mystery in a village, a dystopian dream, or a tale about a talking diary — is part of that same exploration: how we find meaning in an unfinished world, and how imagination keeps us human.
